Active backlink checks for a consultancy, week by week

Placements go live fast and rankings do not. This timeline tells a founder what is worth checking in each stretch, and what is noise.

Read this first

Before you start. The dates below are a working routine, not a forecast, because Google re-crawls pages on its own schedule and we cannot predict yours, whatever size your firm is.

Twelve weeks, in four stretches

  1. Payment and publication

Pay the basket. Most placements go live within about 24 hours. Open each one in ordered links and confirm the status reads live.

  2. Verify every placement

Open the published page, find the link, and confirm it points to the right URL with the anchor you chose. An active backlink is one you have checked yourself.

  3. Wait for the crawl

Google must discover the new page. Search Console may show it under Links within weeks, though not always. Do not reorder because nothing moved yet.

  4. Look at the right numbers

Check impressions and clicks for the target page, not the whole site. Note any change in referral visits from the donor articles.

  5. Decide on a second batch

If the first batch read well and the page is stronger, add a few more. If not, fix the page's content before buying anything.

A log for an invented order

Hypothetical example, made up to show the habit of logging. Nothing here is a typical result.
WhenWhat the log saysWhat the firm does
Day 1Three placements live, all showing dofollowScreenshot each page
Week 3Search Console lists one new linking domainNote it and change nothing
Week 6Impressions on the target page up a little, clicks flatHold, and reread the page itself
Week 12Two intake calls mention a trade articlePlan a small second batch

What not to measure

Skip the daily rank check. Positions swing for reasons unrelated to your order, and a single core update can move everything at once, which makes a day-to-day chart close to meaningless for a small site.

Treat scores with care. Domain Rating from Ahrefs and the equivalent metrics from Moz describe the donor site, and a rise in your own score proves nothing about cause, though recording both at week 12 is still worthwhile.

Ask instead. A consultancy's best signal is a prospect who says they found you through a trade article, so put the question on every intake call and write down the answer.

Four small habits that keep the record clean

Records age badly. Four habits keep yours clean enough to show a partner, an auditor or a successor who takes over the account in a year.

Date the order

Write the day, the donor, the target page and the price in one sheet.

Screenshot the live page

Keep an image of each placement in case it is edited later.

Re-check monthly

Open each donor page once a month to see that the link remains.

Hold a stop rule

Agree in advance the budget at which the partners stop and review.

The honest bit

Success is a stronger page, not a position

Judge the page. If after twelve weeks the target page earns more impressions and the enquiries read better, the plan did enough to repeat, but if nothing changed the page itself probably needs work first. Our first-order walkthrough shows how to size the next batch.

  • Do not judge by one keyword
  • Do not reorder in a panic
  • Do read the red flags again before round two
